THE 8TH STORY
Fans know that there are seven Harry Potter novels made into eight movies. But, the eighth story isn’t a book or a movie. It’s a play called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. It follows Harry’s son as he’s sorted into Slytherin. And right now you can only see it in New York, London or Melbourne Australia.
EAST HIGH SCHOOL AND THE UTAH PREMIERE
East High won the competition to be the first theatre in Utah to perform the High School Edition. It is pretty rare for a school or amateur theatre company to be able to perform a show while the Broadway production or national tour are still performing. But we got the special privilege of being first.
IT'S A PLAY -- NOT A MUSICAL
This epic show has been open in the West End (London's version of the American Broadway) since 2016. It began as a two part show but has been condensed to one 3 hour part. Our version will be even shorter, just a little under 2 hours. We get to use the same music and sound effects as the professional version, but there's no singing. There are, however, a lot of special effects, movement and Engilsh accents. It has a lot of roles like a musical, and will be ridiculously popular like a musical and even contains some movement that some might call dancing, it's the perfect time for those who have thought about participating in theatre but didn't want to sing to get involved.
A PART FOR YOU?
YES! Harry Potter was already quite diverse in it's characters from the very beginning. Not only did we have characters like Dean Thomas and Cho Chang, it's primary theme has always been a symbolic stance against racism. Though not all those characters are present in the cursed child, the role of Hermione was played by a black woman, because these characters appeal to all races and could be played by anyone who can convince the audience they are the character. An Asian Draco in a white blonde wig? Why not? A Latina Hermione? Sure. A Polynesian Voldemort? Bring it. Black professor Snape? Theatre is a place to be anybody you want. East won the opportunity for the premiere precisely because we are a diverse school.
