What is Shrek Dual Language?

In the world of Shrek: Dual Language, everybody speaks and understand both Spanish and English.  The characters bounce back and forth freely and frequently.  If this script is successful we will likely see more productions of favorite musicals coming from Music Theatre International, promoting the performing arts for all students.

Will I be able to understand?

Yes.  And you may increase your Spanish vocabulary as well.  Some things get repeated in both languages.  Some things you will pick up through context.  I’ve been told Shrek is funnier in Spanish.  It will be exciting to see the different ways jokes will land for each language.  I think it’s pretty exciting to watch students use the their acting to make the script enjoyable and comprehensible.

What is a Pilot Program?

This script is not open for general licensing.  It is still a work in progress.  We are one of the first few schools in the nation to try it.  We have been reporting back to the company and our production will be attended by some of the creators of this script to evaluate its effectiveness.  For us, it’s a little like working with a brand-new script with experimentation, suggested changes, last minute updates just like the professionals get when working on a show headed to Broadway.

How did East High come to be one of the pilot schools?

Kelby McIntyre Martinez Dean of Performing Arts Education at the University of Utah also has worked for MTI developing production materials (particularly in choreography.)  When she got wind of this new production she thought of East because she knew we presented the Utah premiere of Dual Language Aladdin (the only other Dual Language title available) 12 years ago.  Kelby and two of her theater ed students are helping with this.  Kelby has choreographed and we’ve had one native Spanish speaker and one returned missionary consulting on language.

Why?

Well, Shrek is a great show.  But we are doing this version right now is because while we have the opportunity, we want to send a very clear message that Theater is for Everybody.  That’s why we are taking full advantage of this opportunity and making sure many students in our school and around the district see it.
